This
Guide to the Slaney Valley is intended to highlight some of
scenic towns and points of cultural interest along the river's length. A
Slaney Drive brochure was published in 2006 and is available by contacting
the Project Officer or Wexford Tourist Office.
Slainghe
was an ancient Irish king from whom the River Slaney and Slane town (County
Meath) derive their names
 (Duffy, 2006). The River Slaney rises on the
western slopes of Lugnaquilla Mountain in County Wicklow, at an elevation of
3,000ft, before passing through the town of Baltinglass, some 15
miles downstream.
A short distance south of here,
at an elevation of 400ft, the Slaney leaves County Wicklow and flows through
east County Carlow, passing through the towns of Rathvilly and Tullow.
From Kildavin bridge, the Slaney leaves County Carlow and commences its
meandering journey through the rich farmlands of County Wexford.
The river passes through the
towns of Bunclody and Clohamon before reaching Enniscorthy
after which the river becomes tidal. A further 13 miles from Enniscorthy,
the river joins the sea at the town of Wexford. A journey of 73 miles
from source to mouth.
